If our prices seem higher, it’s because they’re now inclusive of government taxes and fees. In fact, our component prices per se have not increased. The Department of Transportation (DOT) officially unveiled a series of consumer protection rules aimed at increasing transparency and fairness in the airline industry. The rules were proposed last June and took effect last week.
The DOT announced that all advertised prices are required to include all mandatory taxes and fees as of January 26, 2012, meaning the price you see is the price you’ll pay. This rule applies to any ticket seller, whether it’s an airline, an online travel agent, a tour operator or a human travel agent.
From a consumer standpoint, the agency’s requirements surrounding fare and fee transparency are huge, and will fundamentally affect the way we all shop for vacation packages and airline tickets. Knowing, when searching, that the price you see is the full price, will allow you to make more informed decisions without worrying about what’s NOT included in the price quoted. Some charges, like airline baggage fees (see below) and specific resort fees are not included (e.g. Energy surcharges, baggage handling, cribs and roll-away costs may apply and are payable directly to hotel).
